GEOGRAPHICAL CONDITION
Geographical Location
Magelang Regency as a regency in Central Java is located between other regencies and municipalities such as Temanggung Regency, Semarang Regency, Boyolali Regency, Purworejo Regency, Wonosobo Regency, Magelang Municipality and DIY, stretches along the equator between 110001’51” and 110026’58” East Longitude and between 7019’13” and 7042’16” South Latitude.
Land
Administratively, Magelang Regency is divided into 21 districts and consists of 372 villages, including 2 stage villages with the total area at 108,573 hectares or about 3.34 percent of the total area of Central Java.
People used wetland areas as much as 37,491 hectares or about 34.52 percent from the total area of Magelang Regency. The total area of dry land was about 71,088 hectares or about 65.48 percent.
From the total area of wetland 37,485 hectares, simple technical irrigation about 45.41 percent, reservation about 22.70 percent, technical irrigation about 18.45 percent and semi technical irrigation about 13.44 percent. Dry land areas that used for garden were about 53.10 percent from the total area of dry land. It was the largest percentage among other dry land utilization.
AGRICULTUR
Food Crops
Magelang Regency is one of the supplier regency in Central Java food demand, so that food crop productivity especially paddy productivity should be increased. Average of wetland paddy production reached 54.64 quintals per hectare. Compared to the previous year, it was still higher.
Productivity of palawija was fluctuated if compared to the productivity in the previous year. The production of maize were decreased at 17.39 percent. Whereas production of cassava, sweet potatoes, peanuts & soybeans were increased about 84.82 percent, 86.03 percent, 106.55 percent and 285.00 percent.
Generally, the production of vegetables and fruits were fluctuated if compared to the previous year.
Compared to the previous year, generally plantation production was decreased. On the other hand, production of forestry product and fresh water fish were increased if compared to the previous year.
INDUSTRY & ENERGY
Industry
Industry sector was divided into large, medium and small-scale industry and home industries. According to Central Board of Statistics, large-scale industries have 100 or more workers. Medium scale industries are industries with number of workers from 20 to 99, small scale industries have number of workers from 5 to 19 and home industries are industries which have less than 5 workers.
It was recorded that there were 97 large and medium scale industries in Magelang Regency during 2004, which have 13,907 workers. Compared to the previous year, there was a decrease about 4.50 percent in number of these scales of industries, whereas number of workers was decreased as much as 4.90 percent as well.
